Here’s a clue: On February 14, 2011, this supercomputer, developed by IBM,
appeared on the popular game show, Jeopardy, to compete against human
contestants in a battle of wits and wisdom?
The answer (in true Jeopardy fashion): What (or
perhaps Who) is Watson?
Well, apart from trying to decide if Watson is a thing, a person, or some
strange combination of both, there’s no denying that the supercomputer with
life-like thinking processes and an incredibly sharp understanding of the
English language is definitely making waves in the tech industry and beyond.
So much so in fact that the very vocabulary of IT infrastructure is being
brought into the mix! In news articles, video recaps and blog
posts all across the web, the media, developers and engineers tasked with
introducing Watson to the world have continually referred to the cabinets used
to store Watson’s CPUs and servers as simply being “large refrigerators.”
While it’s not the world’s most sophisticated definition, it does bring to
light an interesting thought – as technology continues to reach a wider audience
(GPS, smartphones & touchscreen tablets just to name a few), the ways in
which we describe and understand these complex systems are constantly being
redefined for mass consumption.
On a literal level, the idea of IT
cabinets as large refrigerators makes complete sense. Just as dairy products
need refrigeration to remain fresh, so too does expensive IT equipment need good thermal cooling to operate
properly. When viewed hand-in-hand, this definition of a supercomputer’s
infrastructure isn’t naïve – it’s elementary my dear Watson! Jeff Cihocki, eContent Specialist

Chatsworth Products, Inc. (CPI) is pleased to congratulate TelecityGroup, one of
Europe’s leading providers of premium network-independent and collocation data
centres, on recently being named winner of the ‘Best Data Centre Innovation’
category at the Greenbang Sustainability Awards for 2010. This prestigious
honor was bestowed upon TelecityGroup after the successful launch of its newest
Paris data center, Condorcet, where an innovative, environmentally-minded design
is expected to save an equivalent of 2,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
TelecityGroup’s CEO, Michael Tobin, points out the award is “recognition for
the ongoing hard work of TelecityGroup and our commitment to environmental
sustainability. We strive to ensure the company’s environmental impact is
minimized throughout all our operations.”
One such example of TelecityGroup’s ongoing commitment to sustainable data
center design and operation is that of its Central London facility, known as Powergate. Offering 5,000 m2 and 10 megawatts (MW) of customer
capacity (with plans to add another 10,000 sq. m of space & 29 MW of
capacity), this large-scale installation is both flexible and energy efficient
thanks in large part to CPI Passive Cooling® Solutions provided by the highly
versatile F-Series TeraFrame® Cabinet
System.
In fact, not long after the Powergate facility opened in 2008, TelecityGroup
enjoyed 20% savings on power and cooling costs thanks to these CPI Solutions. To
learn more about this international success story, read the complete case study here.
With a European sales office in Bourne End, United Kingdom, Chatsworth
Products is proud to provide top-notch solutions to green-minded organizations
like TelecityGroup and others in the EMEA region and beyond. Ultimately, it’s
the success stories of today that help shape positive sustainability for
tomorrow. Jeff Cihocki, eContent Specialist

When it comes to helping customers develop innovative solutions for their most challenging data center needs, Chatsworth Products, Inc. (CPI) excels in variety of design, manufacturing and on-site consultative services. While these services won’t replace the key function of our Engineering and Consultant Providers, they do serve to augment and support their efforts in devising a cutting-edge installation design.
In the spotlight this week is CPI’s Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modeling and its positive impact on data center airflow and performance concerns related to a room’s existing or planned network equipment.
With CPI CFD Modeling, you’ll have access to an expert panel of data center design consultants, field application engineers and technical support, who’ll conduct a rigorous checklist of your installation’s existing and planned airflow, equipment placement and more. Through this precise mathematical analysis, design and placement recommendations are enhanced by a variety of CPI-observed factors, including:
- Shape & size of the data center
- Raised floor & ceiling heights
- Location & type of CRAC units
- Location & open area of perforated tiles, cut-outs & under-floor obstructions
Once these elements have been captured and recorded, CPI’s CFD Modeling will assist customers in creating an optimized installation based on better airflow, maximized network equipment performance and the elimination of wasteful power usage and cooling techniques. Better still, all of this can take place before any timely and costly construction begins.
As part of CPI’s commitment to delight the customer with our products and support, we’re proud to offer this highly-advanced consultation and analysis at no cost to you – something other IT infrastructure support companies just don’t provide.
To learn more about CPI’s CFD Modeling or schedule a free consultation of your own, contact Tech Support at 800-834-4969 or via email. Fernando Reyna, Senior Technical Support Specialist & Steven Bornfield, Senior Data Center Consultant
